PITFALL 4

Training staff on content, not capacity for leadership

WHY IT'S A PROBLEM

Training that focuses only on content equips staff to deliver sessions, but not to adapt, contextualise, or sustain the programme over time. It’s essential to include training that builds skills for leadership, facilitation, and organisational growth to ensure lasting impact in VAW prevention.

LEARNING

Use adaptation to strengthen local organisations

HOW THE PITFALL WAS OVERCOME

In Timor-Leste, an organisation new to violence prevention needed support to examine its own biases, promote critical thinking, and build the skills to deliver quality VAW prevention programming. Instead of preparing them to deliver a ‘pre-designed’ programme, they were involved in every step of the adaptation process. With sustained mentoring, their skills, practices, and confidence grew, enabling high-quality, locally-owned prevention work and positioning them as leaders within local civil society on VAW prevention.
